Due aquile noi siamo,
insieme sopra i cieli
sopra i monti
voliamo.
Le ali tese al vento,
il sole ci rincuora.
La neve il nostro sguardo
offusca lentamente
e un vortice di nuvole
ci segue evanescente.

Due aquile noi siamo,
ma se verrà la Morte
umani e rassegnati
insieme noi vorremmo
andarcene appagati.
Che né l’uno né l’altro resti solo –
questa fine abbia il volo,
così si estingua il fuoco,
così il libro si chiuda.

The Flight

We are two eagles
Flying together
Under the heavens,
Over the mountains,
Stretched on the wind.
Sunlight heartens us,
Blind snow baffles us,
Clouds wheel after us
Ravelled and thinned.

We are like eagles,
But when Death harries us,
Human and humbled
When one of us goes,
Let the other follow,
Let the flight be ended,
Let the fire blacken,
Let the book close.
