La stella di Natale, Boris Pasternak

Era pieno inverno.
Soffiava il vento della steppa.
E aveva freddo il neonato nella grotta
Sul pendio della collina.

L’alito del bue lo riscaldava.
Animali domestici
stavano nella grotta,
sulla culla vagava un tiepido vapore.

Scossi dalle pelli le paglie del giaciglio
e i grani di miglio,
dalle rupi guardavano
assonnati i pastori gli spazi della mezzanotte.

Lontano, la pianura sotto la neve, e il cimitero
e recinti e pietre tombali
e stanghe di carri confitte nella neve,
e sul cimitero il cielo tutto stellato.

E lì accanto, mai vista sino allora,
più modesta d’un lucignolo
alla finestrella d’un capanno,
traluceva una stella sulla strada di Betlemme.

The Star of the Nativity

It was winter, and chill
Wind blew from the steppe,
And the infant felt cold as he lay in that den
On the slope of the hill.

And as he lay there, the child was kept warm
By the breathing of oxen,
And a haze hung over the manger,
For in that cave they kept beasts from the farm.

Shaking the bedstraw and granules of millet
From their sheepskins,
Bleary-eyed herdsmen
Gazed from their crag at the expanse of midnight.

Far away, beneath snow lay the burial yard,
Fields, fences, and tombstones,
Snow-drifted cart shafts,
And over the graves stood a sky full of stars.

And nearby, and unseen hitherto and more timid
Than candle-stub glow
In a night-watchman’s window,
The star on the roadway to Bethlehem glinted.

Lindsey Stirling – O Holy Night (Official Music Video)

Canto di Natale, Sara Teasdale

I re magi arrivarono da sud,
Tutti vestiti con rifiniture d’ermellino;
Gli portarono oro e crisoprasio,
E regali di vino prezioso.

I pastori provennero da nord,
I loro cappotti erano marroni e vecchi;
Gli portarono piccoli agnellini appena nati—
Non avevano oro.

I saggi vennero da est,
Ed erano avvolti nel bianco;
La stella che li ha guidati tutto il tempo
Ha glorificato la notte.

Gli angeli arrivarono dall’alto dei cieli,
Ed erano vestiti di ali;
Ed ecco, portarono una canzone gioiosa
che le creature celesti cantano.

I re bussarono alla porta,
I saggi entrarono,
I pastori li seguirono
Per ascoltare l’inizio della canzone.

Gli angeli cantarono tutta la notte
Fino al sorgere del sole,
Ma il piccolo Gesù si addormentò
Prima che la canzone fosse finita.

Christmas Carol

The kings they came from out the south,
All dressed in ermine fine;
They bore Him gold and chrysoprase,
And gifts of precious wine.

The shepherds came from out the north,
Their coats were brown and old;
They brought Him little new-born lambs—
They had not any gold.

The wise men came from out the east,
And they were wrapped in white;
The star that led them all the way
Did glorify the night.

The angels came from heaven high,
And they were clad with wings;
And lo, they brought a joyful song
The host of heaven sings.

The kings they knocked upon the door,
The wise men entered in,
The shepherds followed after them
To hear the song begin.

The angels sang through all the night
Until the rising sun,
But little Jesus fell asleep
Before the song was done.
